Experienced litigator shares 20 years of construction industry expertise

Wood Smith Henning & Berman’s Sam McDermott will speak at the 35th annual IRMI Construction Risk Conference, November 8-11, 2015 at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada. At 1:30pm on Monday, November 9, Sam will share his construction litigation expertise at the educational workshop, “Whose Design is it Anyway?” A case study approach will be used to identify hidden risks in design-build, building information modeling (BIM), and integrated project delivery settings. Conference attendees will learn how to identify design risks, allocate the liabilities contractually, and arrange appropriate insurance coverage for these daunting exposures.

“Today's commercial contractor accepts more design responsibility than ever before,” said Sam, partner at the Orange County office of WSHB. “The risks are enormous, insurance coverage is often unclear, and contractual risk transfers may be insufficient.”

Sam has litigated numerous cases at the state and federal level involving complex construction, tort and environmental issues. He has an extensive amount of experience in commercial construction litigation involving construction payment disputes, delay damages, onsite injuries, workplace regulations, prevailing wage claims, professional liability and construction quality issues. Sam has also represented some of the nation’s largest residential builders in construction defect issues, and he also handles a substantial number of transactional and administrative matters.
