Overview

Jeremy J. Butler is a Senior Counsel in WSHB’s Phoenix office, bringing a rare combination of federal judicial experience, government litigation leadership, and over a decade of civil defense practice to every matter he handles. His practice is focused on representing clients in complex tort defense—including product liability, premises liability, and general liability—alongside transportation and vehicle accident litigation, medical malpractice, professional liability, and high-exposure catastrophic injury cases, in both state and federal courts.

Prior to joining WSHB, Jeremy served as a federal Immigration Judge with the Executive Office for Immigration Review. His judicial tenure refined the same skills he brings to defense litigation: disciplined case management, rigorous legal analysis, and a judge’s-eye understanding of how arguments are evaluated and decisions are made.

Before joining the bench, Jeremy built an extensive record as a federal and state government litigator. As an Assistant United States Attorney in the Civil Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Districts of Arizona and Hawaii, he served as trial counsel, managed a broad tort litigation portfolio, and led the office’s Financial Litigation Unit. He also defended multi-million-dollar medical malpractice claims against physicians and facilities.  In the District of Hawaii, he also served as Deputy Civil Chief. Earlier in his career, he defended the State of Arizona, its agencies, and employees at the Arizona Attorney General’s Office. There, he litigated several jury trials to verdict.

Jeremy began his legal career as a law clerk to the Honorable Christopher A. Nuechterlein, U.S. Magistrate Judge, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana. He is a graduate of Valparaiso University School of Law, where he earned his J.D. cum laude, and is admitted to practice in Arizona, Indiana, and multiple federal district courts as well as the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Outside of work, Jeremy enjoys cycling, jogging, and hiking.
