In February 2005, a California jury handed down a verdict in a right of publicity suit which astonished the legal community. Christoff v. Nestle,
S.A. et al., No. EC036163 (Los Angeles County Super. Ct. Jan. 27, 2005). It awarded Russell Christoff, a kindergarten teacher from Concord, California, $15.6 million for the unauthorized use of his likeness on Taster’s Choice packages from 1997 through 2003.
