Law Students
Wood, Smith, Henning & Berman has had a summer associate program since its establishment in 1997. The program was designed to give summer associates a genuine, hands-on work experience so that they gain an understanding of what it is like to practice law at our firm.
Work Assignments
Rather than stick summer associates in a library all day, WSH&B provides a wide range of opportunities for law students to work directly on client matters. It is the firm's belief that direct participation allows for the best experience, and summer associates are given the opportunity to attend, observe and assist with depositions, mediations and courtroom appearances. Projects are designed to cover a wide range of tasks while allowing the summer associate to work with different attorneys in different practice areas. Summer associates are given a wide variety of assignments, which provides an opportunity for the law student to discover interests while allowing WSH&B to find where each summer associate best fits in.
Professional Development and Feedback
WSH&B fosters an environment where assigning attorneys work closely with summer associates to assist with projects and tasks while also helping them enhance their time management skills. Constructive feedback is provided through mid- and endsummer evaluations. In turn, WSH&B has an open door policy that welcomes any comments or suggestions from the summer associates.
Formal Training
Summer associates are encouraged to participate in the firm's in-house Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) seminars. Past MCLE seminars have included:
  • Trial Evidence / Objections Seminar
  • How to Influence the Mediator in Private Caucus
  • An Overview of Business and Valuation and Related Discounting
  • Federal Practice
  • Mediation Advocacy
Social Events
WSH&B provides its summer associates with opportunities to become familiar with the firm's attorneys and with one another on a social level as well as on a professional one. Past events have included the firm's annual Casino Night, Dodger Day, Bowling Nights, the UCLA Tennis Tournament, as well as dinners with the partners and many happy hours.
How to Apply
WSH&B recruits summer associates from a number of law schools. If you are a law student with a strong academic background and want to experience what it is like to work at WSH&B, please submit your resume to Victoria Ersoff.
